318 and 320 Salem Avenue were constructed from 1943 to 1945. 316 Salem Avenue was constructed before WW II and operated for some period as a bar. Originally, 318 and 320 Salem Avenue were an auto upholstery shop and Roanoke Glass Shop operated our of the back door in the alley. The owner had a hand pointing down painted on the brick at the top of the short alley on Campbell Avenue for advertising. The front of the building was remodeled in 1964 to accommodate AUTO Investment and Loan Corporation and Roanoke Glass Shop took over the rest of the building as the upholstery shop had gone out of business. The glass front was added as a facade to cover the old front in 1984 and if someone wants restore the old front they would have no problems as it is still in tack. The upper five windows were removed to facilitate the new glass with no mullions, other than that all is still there. There is a small basement, however most of it contains the old coal furnace and that takes up most of the space.
